GA CHAIRMAN REAPPOINTED

Greyhounds Australasia (GA) is pleased to announce the reappointment of Jan Wilson to the position of chairman and Phillip Bennett as deputy chairman to the Board of Greyhounds Australasia.

Mrs Wilson and Mr Bennett were re-elected unopposed at GA’s Annual General Meeting held on Friday November 25, 2005.

Both Mrs Wilson and Mr Bennett remain in office for a two-year period and continue to bring extensive industry and commercial experience to the GA Board.

At the Annual General Meeting, Mrs Wilson commented on some of the organisation’s achievements during 2004/05 and stated the following:

“There is no doubt that the major accomplishment of the year was the redrafting of our National Rules. These have now been adopted by most Authorities, or are shortly to be adopted, and recognise the need for greater uniformity. They allow trainers to race their greyhounds in any of our member jurisdictions, safe in the knowledge that the same rules apply.

“With the rewriting of the rules, particular attention was paid to a number of important animal welfare issues, including mandatory certified inoculations and boosters prior to racing. At the other end of the scale the new rules provide for the care and responsibility for greyhounds when their racing career is over, and instigate an appropriate reporting process to all Authorities.

“The new national rules also include a number of recommendations from the Breeders Task Force with regard to artificial insemination. These rules not only provide for the welfare of stud greyhounds, they also require accountability and integrity for the provision of artificial frozen insemination.”

In relation to the Greyhound Passport, Mrs Wilson advised that she had visited the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) to discuss the provisions of the passport and indicated that it was a necessity of the AQIS documentation prior to exporting.

“During the year, GA members provided information to assist with the completion of a welfare matrix, as we progress towards a national welfare policy.” Mrs Wilson said.

In conclusion, Mrs Wilson expressed appreciation to all directors and staff for their support and input throughout the year and indicated how a number of challenges confront GA during 2005/06, but with the goodwill and dedication of all she believes it will be another successful year.

At the time of addressing the members, a proposal is already being considered by the GA Directorate relating to a centralised repository for monitoring and tracking of frozen semen.

Mr Craig Taberner, who was appointed GA chief executive officer in May 2005, was optimistic when looking into his crystal ball and reflecting on his short time in the role.

Mr Taberner indicated that he anticipates several tough decisions ahead but with the continued support of the GA Directorate, staff and industry participants the future for Australian and New Zealand greyhound racing remains bright.

“Personally, I am extremely satisfied with my change in industry’s and look forward to driving GA’s future objectives,” Mr Taberner said.

It should be noted that GA remains a strong voice in the community and has been involved in the development and implementation of the Federal Government’s national animal welfare strategy.

GA continues to play a pivotal role in establishing an environment that facilitates uniform, responsive and binding decisions that maximises returns to the greyhound industry and at the same time ensures the integrity and fair conduct of greyhound racing throughout Australia and New Zealand.
